Approaching the birth of our first baby, I wanted to deliver unmedicated but was apprehensive about being able to do so. Katherine, through her hynobirthing classes, gave me confidence to not only trust my body, but work with my body to have the successful birth I desired. She teaches based on anatomy and the workings of a laboring body based on sound medical knowledge and experience. She is encouraging and took time to answer all of our questions. In addition to her classes, we have been blessed to have her as a doula at our three births. Each time she coached us to be able to express our concerns and have our desires heard. She was extremely helpful in keeping my husband at the forefront of the labor and delivery process. She encouraged me and helped to keep me focused as labor became more difficult. Even with anxious nurses (for no medical reason) trying to direct me and the tension in the room rising (because of a long labor in one instance and our baby in a posterior position in another), Katherine kept her cool and helped me to do so as well. We highly recommend Katherine to anyone wanting to experience an unmedicated birth and/or have the support of a doula. She has blessed our lives greatly, and we love her!
I was referred to Katherine through a friend who had recently given birth. I was hesitant to meet with a doula because I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for as I was a first time mom. I had heard good things about doulas, but I wasn’t sure that I was really the type of person who used a doula. I figured a meeting with her wouldn’t hurt, and I could decide from there. All my concerns were erased as soon as I met with Katherine. She came to my home and met with my husband and I. She was so friendly and professional and I immediately felt comfortable around her. She asked what type of birth experience we were looking for and addressed our questions and concerns. Something that I loved about Katherine was that she used to be a nurse and really knows her stuff. After that first meeting, I knew I needed Katherine by my side throughout my pregnancy and birth.
A few months later, I began taking Katherine’s Hypnobirthing class. Again, I was hesitant and didn’t know quite what to expect. The class was incredible! I learned so much about pregnancy and birth that really helped me. Katherine was a great teacher and was patient with my class as we asked numerous questions about what to expect.
On October 1, I texted Katherine and told her I thought I was in labor. She immediately responded and asked about the contractions and how I was feeling. Katherine called me and told me a few things I could do to help with the contractions and said she’d head over as soon as I was ready for her. When Katherine arrived to my house, I was in tears. I was so happy to have her by my side to help calm me down and help guide me through the birth experience. A few hours later, we headed to the hospital where I was quickly admitted. I had plans to have a natural birth, but I was in so much pain and I just couldn’t relax. I talked with Katherine about getting an epidural, something I hadn’t wanted to do since I had spent months preparing my body for birth. Something Katherine said that day that really stuck with me was, “This is your experience. It is all about you.” I was worried that I would let her down by getting the epidural, but Katherine was fully supportive of my decision. I have always been a very private person when it comes to my body, but I felt comfortable with Katherine in the delivery room alongside my husband and my mother.
Throughout my labor, Katherine chatted with my family and I, laughed with us, and eased my nervous mind. She was an absolute pleasure to have alongside me that day and I cannot imagine the experience without her. Katherine remained in touch with me after giving birth and would contact me frequently to see how things were going. She offered to come out to my house and help me with anything that I needed during those first few weeks with a newborn.
If you are looking for a doula, I highly recommend Katherine. She is the sweetest person you’ll ever meet. She is so genuine and really cares for the women she works with. She has a way of calming you down and relaxing you just by being there. Throughout the pregnancy and my birth, Katherine was by my side. She was readily available through text or a phone call when I needed her. I know I couldn’t have done this without her support. She experienced the biggest day of my life right along side me, not only as my doula, but as a friend. I truly came to love Katherine and will forever consider her a close friend. Thank you, Katherine! My family and I are so grateful for you! We love you! ---Ashlee, Kyle and Cooper
I knew I wanted an unmedicated birth as soon as I found out I was pregnant. A friend recommended I look into hypnobirthing. It wasn’t until I was 34 weeks pregnant that I began to look for a doula. However, I still needed to be coached in hypnobirth. My doula recommended Katherine Reed and although she lived in Utah County, I didn’t mind driving from Salt Lake City. Katherine is very professional, and knowledgeable about birth. I felt reassured taking classes from her and would like to thank her for her generosity, insights, and guidance. I was able to deliver my baby unmedicated using hynobirthing techniques Katherine taught me. Weeks leading up to the birth, I would play the tape over and over in the evening, and would read out loud the birth affirmations. I labored alone at home for two days using hypnobirthing techniques and the hospital staff were surprised that I arrived at the hospital at 9 centimeters dilated looking calm as can be. I was able to labor in a water tub at the hospital before making my final pushes on the hospital bed to a calm midwifery staff, dimmed lights, and a supportive doula, thanks to my hypnobirth techniques. Thank you, Katherine!!!
